Thrift Stores, continued
Last week we started discussing some of Athens’ best kept secrets: the thrift stores. You can find a wealth of treasures and more junk that one person could ever need at one or more of these stores. Here are some more treasure troves to explore:
Emmanuel Episcopal Thrift House- With lots of used clothes and home goods, EETH does not accept or sell electronics. They are open Wednesday through Saturday, and donate 100% of their proceeds to local and international charities. They are right beside, but not affiliated with Atlanta Union Mission on Prince Avenue.
Atlanta Union Mission- has household goods and linens, decorative items, small kitchen appliances, books, media, electronics, large appliances and furniture. Non-working electronics are restored to working condition by AUM clients. Proceeds support the AUM’s mission of working to end homelessness. Atlanta Union Mission will pick up your donations for free.
Habitat for Humanity reStore- Of Barber Street you’ll find lots of furniture, along with discarded building materials. Old doors, windows, and light fixtures hope to get repurposed or used as replacements in your home. Prices are not as low as Goodwill, but they have a larger selection. reStore will also pick your donations up for free or you can drop them off at the store.
Salvation Army- The Salvation Army has been in Athens since 1916, although the thrift store didn’t open until 1979 (it was Athens’ first). Expect to find clothes, books, household items, and furniture. Proceeds help many of the Salvation Army’s charitable programs, and donations are accepted at the store on Hawthorne Avenue.
St. Mary’s Upscale Thrift Store- DVDs, books, furniture, home goods, and more can be found on Broad Street. All sales benefit St. Mary’s Hospice Services. All donations are tax deductible and arrangements may be made for pick up in St. Mary’s yellow converted ambulance, lovingly called “Old Yeller.”
Don’t forget to check these stores regularly since the merchandise is always changing. Happy savings!
